A Counseling Program Based on Acceptance and Commitment Strategies for Reducing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Mothers of Patient-Children with Kidney Failure

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the effectiveness of a counseling program in reducing post-traumatic stress disorder among mothers of children with kidney failure. The continuity of program effectiveness was also investigated. The participants were (20) mothers attending kidney dialysis units within some government hospitals in Cairo. They were between (30-50) years of age (mean age = 40.60, SD = 4.235), and they were Children between (7-13) years of age (mean age = 10.05, SD = 1.791). They were assigned to an experimental group and a group one. There were (10) mothers within each group. Socio-economic and cultural status assessment scale (Abdullah, 2018), post-traumatic stress disorder scale, as well as the counseling program (prepared by the researcher) were administered. Results indicated the effectiveness of the cognitive-behavioral counseling based on acceptance and commitment strategies in reducing psychological disorders resulting from the impact of trauma due to the disease affected the children of mothers of the experimental group participants. There were statistically significant differences between the mean rank scores obtained by the experimental group on the pre- and post-tests of post-traumatic stress disorder, in favor of the post-measurement. There were also statistically significant differences between the mean rank scores obtained by the experimental and control groups on the post-test of post-traumatic stress disorder, in favor of the experimental group. Unlike, there no statistically significant differences between the mean rank scores obtained by the experimental group on the post- and follow-up tests of post-traumatic stress disorder.
