The current study aims to explore the relationship between existential vacuum and digital addiction among university students, as well as the role of moral intelligence in these relationships. It also examines differences in moral intelligence, existential vacuum, and digital addiction based on gender and specialization. The sample consisted of 539 male and female students from Al-Azhar University, including students from the faculties of Education (for both genders), Science (for both genders), and Media. The study used the Existential Vacuum Scale (Kasem et al., 2013), along with scales for Moral Intelligence and Digital Addiction developed by the researchers.
The findings revealed a positive correlation between existential vacuum and digital addiction, and a negative correlation between moral intelligence and digital addiction. Furthermore, moral intelligence was inversely related to some dimensions of existential vacuum. Gender differences were found in moral intelligence and digital addiction, favoring males, while differences in existential vacuum favored females. No significant differences were observed based on academic specialization (theoretical vs. practical faculties).
The study concluded that moral intelligence acts as a moderating variable in the relationship between existential vacuum and digital addiction, after controlling for its statistical influence. This suggests that moral intelligence plays a crucial role in mitigating the negative effects of existential vacuum on digital addiction.
